If you’re someone who struggles with depression, anxiety, or another mental health condition — and you’ve also been told your cholesterol is high, your gums are in bad shape, or that you have inflammation in your body — this article is especially for you.
What are omega-3 fatty acids?
Your body can’t make omega-3s on its own, so you have to get them from food or supplements. Most Americans don’t get nearly enough.
The cardiovascular package: your heart, your blood, and your gums
Most people don’t think of gum disease as a heart problem. But it is — and omega-3s address the whole package.
Triglycerides and your heart. This is the single most proven benefit of omega-3s. At doses of 1–4 grams per day, they reduce triglycerides by 20–45% — an effect so strong that the FDA has approved prescription omega-3 medications for this purpose. High triglycerides damage blood vessels, promote plaque buildup, and dramatically increase your risk of heart attack and stroke. In the landmark REDUCE-IT trial, purified EPA at 4 grams per day reduced heart attacks, strokes, and cardiovascular death by 25%.
Gum disease is a cardiovascular risk factor. This surprises most people, but it shouldn’t. Inflamed, bleeding gums allow bacteria and their toxic byproducts to enter your bloodstream continuously. This damages blood vessel walls, accelerates atherosclerosis (plaque in your arteries), and raises your overall cardiovascular risk. Gum disease and heart disease share the same inflammatory engine.
Omega-3s treat both sides of this equation. A review of 13 clinical trials found that omega-3 supplements significantly improved all three key markers of gum disease: less bleeding, less gum recession, and shallower pockets where bacteria hide. So while omega-3s are lowering your triglycerides and protecting your arteries from the inside, they’re also shutting down one of the major sources of cardiovascular inflammation at the gum line.
Think of it this way: high triglycerides are pouring gasoline on the fire, and gum disease is lighting the match. Omega-3s turn down both.
The inflammation story: when your immune system turns against you
Inflammation is your body’s defense system. But when it stays switched on — chronically — it stops protecting you and starts damaging you. This is the thread that connects an astonishing number of conditions, and omega-3s are one of the most effective tools we have to calm it down.
Rheumatoid arthritis: the strongest autoimmune evidence. RA is a disease where your immune system attacks your own joints, causing pain, swelling, and destruction. Across 23 clinical trials, omega-3s consistently reduced joint swelling, pain, morning stiffness, and the need for anti-inflammatory painkillers. This isn’t theoretical — it’s one of the most well-proven benefits of omega-3s, period. If you have RA, omega-3s may allow you to reduce your reliance on medications that carry their own serious side effects.
Lupus: calming systemic inflammation. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is another autoimmune condition driven by runaway inflammation — but instead of targeting just the joints, it can attack the skin, kidneys, brain, and blood vessels. A meta-analysis of 5 clinical trials showed that omega-3 supplementation moderately improved disease activity in lupus patients. Additional genetic research supports this connection, suggesting the benefit is real, not coincidental.
The common thread. Whether it’s RA destroying your joints, lupus attacking your organs, gum disease eroding your gums and feeding inflammation into your bloodstream, or high triglycerides damaging your arteries — chronic inflammation is the shared engine. Omega-3 fatty acids produce specialized molecules called pro-resolving mediators that actively shut down inflammatory pathways throughout the body. They don’t just mask symptoms — they help resolve inflammation at its source.
The mental health connection: where all of this comes together
Here’s where the story gets personal for anyone dealing with depression, anxiety, or other psychiatric conditions.
Depression, inflammation, and gum disease form a vicious cycle.
When you’re depressed or under chronic stress, your body produces more stress hormones and inflammatory chemicals (things like IL-6, TNF-α, and CRP). These raise your triglycerides, damage your gums, and fuel systemic inflammation.
At the same time, gum disease pumps bacteria and inflammatory signals into your bloodstream. These can actually cross into your brain, increasing neuroinflammation — inflammation in the brain itself — which worsens depression and anxiety. Studies confirm this is a two-way street: people with gum disease have significantly higher depression scores.
And if you have an autoimmune condition like RA or lupus on top of this? The inflammatory burden multiplies. Research consistently shows that people with RA and lupus have significantly higher rates of depression — not just because living with a chronic illness is hard, but because the same inflammatory chemicals driving joint destruction and organ damage are also disrupting brain chemistry.
So you can end up stuck in a devastating loop: depression → more inflammation → worse gum disease, worse joints, worse autoimmune flares → more inflammation reaching the brain → worse depression.
Omega-3s intervene at every point in that cycle.
A clinical study of 155 people with major depression found that when researchers looked specifically at patients with high inflammation (measured by a blood test called hs-CRP), EPA-rich omega-3s worked significantly better than placebo. In another study, 64% of depressed patients with high inflammation responded to higher-dose EPA — and the more their inflammation decreased, the more their depression improved.
Omega-3s may work best in the people who need them most: those carrying the heaviest inflammatory and metabolic burden.
Beyond these systems: what else does the evidence show?
The benefits don’t stop there. Here’s what else the science supports:
Brain health and aging. A large analysis of over 103,000 participants found that higher omega-3 intake was associated with about 20% lower risk of cognitive decline and dementia. One study found omega-3 supplementation slowed brain aging by 2.5 years.
Fatty liver disease. A meta-analysis of 9 studies found significant reductions in liver fat — relevant for anyone with NAFLD/MASLD.
Healthy pregnancy. Omega-3s reduce the risk of premature birth and support fetal brain development.
Metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. Higher omega-3 levels are associated with 26% lower risk of metabolic syndrome, with benefits seen in PCOS and gestational diabetes.
“But I’m already on medication — can I still take fish oil?”
Discuss this with your doctor, but omega-3 supplements have an excellent safety profile. The most common side effects are a fishy aftertaste and mild stomach upset.
Compare that to many psychiatric medications, which can cause weight gain, raise blood sugar, increase triglycerides, or affect your thyroid and kidneys. The irony: some medications prescribed for mental health can worsen the metabolic and inflammatory problems fueling the condition.
Omega-3s are not meant to replace your medications. But they may be a valuable addition — one that supports your mental health while simultaneously improving your physical health.
What kind of omega-3 should you take?
Choose EPA-dominant formulations. The research on depression, inflammation, and autoimmune disease points most strongly to EPA.
Aim for 1–2 grams of EPA per day for general anti-inflammatory and mood support. Your doctor may recommend up to 4 grams if your triglycerides are very high.
Quality matters. Look for products tested by third parties (IFOS, USP, or NSF certification) to ensure purity.
Take it with food to improve absorption and reduce aftertaste.
Prescription options exist. If your triglycerides are significantly elevated, your doctor may prescribe icosapent ethyl — a standardized, high-dose pure EPA with proven cardiovascular benefits.
Omega-3 fatty acids are one of the most versatile, well-studied, and safest interventions available. They lower triglycerides (FDA-approved), reduce cardiovascular events, calm autoimmune inflammation in RA and lupus, improve gum disease, protect your brain as you age, and may enhance antidepressant response — especially in people with high inflammation.
If you’re dealing with a mental health condition and also have high triglycerides, autoimmune disease, signs of chronic inflammation, or gum disease, ask your doctor about adding omega-3s.
The worst-case scenario? Your triglycerides go down, your joints feel better, your inflammation decreases, and your gums get healthier. The best case? Your mental health improves too.
That seems like a conversation worth having.
